The Witches of Eastwick

The outstanding writer John Updike (1932-2009) is one of the most talented American literati. It is no wonder that in 1965 V. V. Nabokov said: "In a generation, rarely more than two or three truly first-class writers emerge. I think... that Salinger and Updike are the most subtle among the writing artists of recent years". The heroines of the novel "The Witches of Eastwick" are three women with magical powers, though they do not always use them for good. But whatever they do, whatever they wish for, the essence of their actions and aspirations is a woman's search for happiness.
Director George Miller adapted the novel into a film featuring Jack Nicholson as the devil tempter, while the witches were played by Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher, and Susan Sarandon.
