The decent and kind young man Karl Rossmann, the hero of Franz Kafka's book «Lost in America», arrives in America hoping that through... diligent work he can secure a decent life for himself. However, in a world where the law of the strong prevails over the strength of the law, where hunger and fear lurk at every corner, — in such a world a person's fate depends on all sorts of coincidences, but never on his will. Too often, only the loss of humanity gives a chance to achieve success, and since Karl Rossmann does not wish to part with good intentions, fate entices him with the ghosts of fortune to cruelly throw him back to the very depths of life.
