The Dark Flower

John Galsworthy — a famous English novelist, playwright, and poet, Nobel Prize winner in Literature (1932), author of the beloved by many generations of readers «The Forsyte Saga». «The best way to the heart of the reader is to represent life as you see it, with all the sincerity and perfection you are capable of,» — believed Galsworthy. In many of his works, one can feel an autobiographical beginning, among them is the novel «The Dark Flower» (1913). Its hero — Mark Lennan, at different stages of life experiences new love, a new passion that captivates him. «Spring», «Summer», «Autumn» — the titles of the parts of the novel corresponding to the youth, the period of maturity and the maturity of Mark Lennan. The famous dancer Margaret Morris recognized herself in one of the heroines of the novel: «Reading „Autumn“, I was struck by how precisely [Galsworthy] reproduced entire fragments of our conversations verbatim.» How destructive is the passion that drives the hero for himself and for his loved ones, and how applicable are moral assessments to the feeling of love — on these questions the author allows the readers to answer.
