A family drama unfolds during and after World War I on the French Riviera, where the rich and very rich, mostly Americans, enjoy life. From the outside, it seems that the lives of the characters are serene and prosperous. Among the aristocratic elite stands out the couple Nicole and Dick Diver - handsome, wealthy, and public darlings. But behind the beautiful facade lies tragedy. In the air, there is emptiness, boredom, disappointment. The characters of the novel are restless souls, sometimes unaware of the reasons for their anxiety. Dissatisfaction, cooling of feelings, search for thrills, and disappointment again - what is this? Overindulgence or internal conflict?
