1984

George Orwell (1903–1950) protested against the totalitarian social system with all his work. This theme, due to historical reasons, was relevant in the literature of the first half of the 20th century, but it has not lost its urgency even... today. The dystopian novel «1984» (1949) depicts a totalitarian London of the future — a major city of Oceania, which is in a continuous state of war with two other world superpowers. Society has a strict social hierarchy, and most citizens live in poverty and under the constant surveillance of the Thought Police. The main character, Winston Smith, has been pretending to be a law-abiding official who shares accepted political ideals for many years. But the suddenly ignited feelings for his colleague Julia turn his life upside down: they bring temporary happiness but also put him outside the law.
