Memoirs of the Devil

French writer and playwright Frédéric Sullé (1800–1847) gained the widest recognition from the public during his lifetime. His plays were performed on renowned stages, and his books were repeatedly published and translated into other languages, but his greatest fame came from his novel “Memoirs of the Devil.” Baron François Armand de Luizzi has, like all members of his kind, a special privilege — to enter into direct contact with the Devil and even command him (not for free, of course; that's not how it works with unclean forces). The request from the young baron seems harmless: he wishes to hear the stories of people around him as they are known only to the all-knowing demon-tempter, to learn all about tragic mistakes, temptations they could not resist, the all-consuming force of hatred — about things people usually do not share with anyone. Against the backdrop of “devilish revelations,” the life of de Luizzi himself unfolds, full of good intentions and heavy missteps, and the price that the Devil demands becomes higher and higher…
