The Captive

The main character of this book is a young man belonging to high society, who analyzes his relationship with his beloved, Albertine. Relationships are a compromise. Each party is forced to give something up, consciously limiting their freedom. However, in this case, the limitations are not distributed very fairly. Albertine has to make many more sacrifices, and this burdens her, she becomes a captive.
The novel "The Captive" by the famous writer Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is a masterfully painted portrait of the French upper class, part of the famous cycle "In Search of Lost Time." The previous books of the cycle have been published earlier in this same series.
