Starting from 1962, when, according to Joseph Brodsky himself, he «began to write poetry seriously», the poet tried to write a poem for each Christmas — as a greeting for the birthday. «After all, what is Christmas? The birthday of... the God-Man. And it is no less natural for a person to celebrate it than his own». Nevertheless, the Christmas poems collected in this book are special greetings: together they represent not only a gift for Christmas but also the quintessence of Brodsky's creativity.
