Island of Mermaids

Mi zha and Yong Suk, two young Koreans from Jeju Island, have been friends since childhood, despite coming from different social backgrounds. As they grow up, they start working in the divers' cooperative of their native village, run by Yong Suk's mother. Together they master the ancient art of haenyeo, female sea divers, full of adventures and dangers. But not only the dark depths of the ocean hide threats: due to its strategically advantageous location, Jeju Island becomes an apple of discord among powerful powers, intertwining the personal experiences of the heroines with the larger history of the 20th century.
