John Ruskin (1819–1900) — a famous English historian and theorist of art, an original and sometimes paradoxical thinker, whose reflections sometimes captivate with the precision of their insights. Art criticism in his interpretation resembles an academic course the least, but he was indeed the first professor of fine arts at Oxford University, using his «charged with fiery passion and wonderful music» speeches to make «the deaf... hear and the blind — see,» if we believe the testimony of his student Oscar Wilde. This collection includes the fundamental treatise «The Seven Lamps of Architecture» (1849), the monumental treatise «The Stones of Venice» (1851–1853, based on the author's abridged edition), «Lectures on Art» (1870), as well as a peculiar guide to the blooming capital of the Renaissance «Walks in Florence» (1875).
