Emmanuel Todd (born 1951) is a French historian, sociologist, demographer, and journalist. He graduated from the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, received his doctorate from Cambridge, and worked at the National Institute of Demographic Studies. In 1976, he predicted the imminent collapse of the USSR. The focus of his interests includes the latest problems of demography, trends of economic stagnation in developed countries, and the collapse of their political systems. The book "The Defeat of the West" is dedicated to the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. Emmanuel Todd justifies his perspective on current events, which is distinctly different from the Western mainstream. According to the author of the book, the defeat of Ukraine is inevitable, and this, in turn, will be a defeat for the West, for which it is to blame itself due to the continuously growing national debt, its own industrial decline, inflated self-importance, and blindness to the diversity of the world.
