In 330 AD, Emperor Constantine the Great founded a city on the site of the ancient settlement of Byzantium and named it after himself Constantinople. Thanks to the attention of the Byzantine emperor and his subsequent successors, the city remained one of the most important metropolises of the Mediterranean until it was conquered by the Turks in 1453.
