The events of the two stories combined in this collection are chronologically connected. First, Lykov investigates a series of murders at the 16th All-Russian Industrial Fair in Nizhny Novgorod, and on his way home to St. Petersburg, he encounters another... incident. On the train, Alexei Nikolaevich notices a very suspicious fellow traveler and, unexpectedly for himself, decides to get off with him right in the middle of the night. The dark man leads Lykov to a den where an entire gang of thugs resides under the guise of gamekeepers, and there, the seasoned detective falls into a trap…
