Cornelius Tacitus (circa 50s – circa 120) is one of the most renowned historians of Ancient Rome. The book includes two of his major historical works: "Annals" and "History." The "Annals" cover the events from 14 to 68 AD, that... is, from the death of Emperor Octavian Augustus to the end of the rule of the Julian-Claudian dynasty. The "History" originally encompassed the period from 69 to 96 AD – the time of civil war in Ancient Rome (the so-called Year of the Four Emperors), as well as the rule of the Flavian dynasty. Both works have not survived to us in full, which does not diminish their significance. Tacitus is rightly regarded as the greatest of Roman historians due to his literary talent, deep analysis of sources, and insight into the psychology of the characters. His writings gained widespread recognition in Europe during the Modern Era and undoubtedly influenced the development of its historical and political thought.
