The fate of Emperor Alexander I is full of contradictory events and fateful turns. He is the glorious victor over Napoleon, yet an indecisive reformer; a skillful and cunning diplomat, but a deeply sensitive and anxious person; a "weak and... cunning ruler", yet a "sphinx, unsolved until the grave." D.S. Merezhkovsky's novel "Alexander I" narrates the last months of the emperor's reign, the formation of secret societies, and the preparation for the future Decembrist uprising. Against the backdrop of dramatic events in the country's history, the images of the emperor himself and his entourage emerge before the readers: his wife, aides, and courtiers.D.S. Merezhkovsky's work is accompanied by the publication of the memoirs of the lady-in-waiting of the imperial court, Sofia Shuazel-Gufie, as well as selected excerpts from the extensive work of historian N.K.
