The collections of poems by Joseph Brodsky (1940–1996) "Stop in the Desert" (1970), "The End of a Beautiful Era" (1977), "Part of Speech", "New Stanzas to Augusta" (1983), "Urania" (1987) and "Landscape with Flood" (1996) were published in the 1970s...
to 1990s by the American publishing house "Ardis". The poet himself worked on compiling these books in collaboration with his friends Karl and Ellendea Proffer, the founders of "Ardis". In this legendary publishing house, as well as in the publishing houses "Seed" and "IMCA-Press", works of Russian literature that could not see the light in the Soviet Union were published for many years. Brodsky wrote about Karl Proffer: "He returned continuity of development to Russian literature and thereby restored its dignity... he saved numerous Russian writers and poets from oblivion, from distortion of their words, from nervous illness and despair. Moreover, he changed the very climate of Russian literature."
The collection "Stop in the Desert", presented in this edition, includes poems from the 1960s.
