Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) is referred to as the last writer of the Victorian era. His fame is primarily attributed to the cycle of works created between 1872 and 1895 — the so-called novels of character and environment. He gained wide recognition primarily with the novel "Far from the Madding Crowd" (1874).
The proud, independent Bathsheba Everdene dreams of love. There are several potential suitors, but in each admirer, the girl finds a flaw — one is too virtuous, another is too old and dull... But soon a dashing handsome sergeant appears, and intrigue, mystery, crime, dishonored honor, and, of course, true, genuine passion come to the forefront. This story has been adapted for film several times.
