Shakespeare's sonnets are a collection of 154 lyrical poems by William Shakespeare in early modern English, mostly written between 1592 and 1599 during the height of the Elizabethan era. They have a personal, intimate character and were not created for publication. They tell of friendship, love, and the philosophy of relationships with two non-personified addressees. Shakespeare's sonnets are traditionally divided into three main thematic groups: sonnets 1 to 126 are dedicated to a young friend — patron; 127 to 152 to the dark lady; 153 and 154 are the concluding sonnets, completing the cycle, about Cupid.
