Sometimes, grief and poverty visit a home. For adults, this is a reason to get upset, work hard, and worry about investments and loans. But for children, it's a great opportunity to go treasure hunting. And that's exactly what six brothers and sisters from the Bastable family did. They decided to help their widowed father get rich.
As soon as they began to use their imagination, they found many other interesting ways to replenish the family budget! For example, publishing a book of their own poems, working as private detectives and conducting an investigation, or rescuing an elderly gentleman in distress so that he would leave a large inheritance to the children in gratitude. Or, as a last resort, becoming robbers and capturing an unsuspecting carefree traveler. Of course, in hopes of a ransom.
And this is just a part of the fascinating stories from the life of the Bastable family included in this collection. Thanks to the writing talent of Edith Nesbit, admired by such master wordsmiths as C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and Diana Wynne Jones, even the most jaded reader won't be bored.
