The Story of the Old Apartment

Dedicated to our grandmothers and grandfathers.

An old house in a quiet Moscow lane, six flights up and a door to the left - and we are at the Muromtsevs'. We entered the old Moscow apartment on an October evening in 1902 and stayed here for a full hundred years. We got to know several generations of the Muromtsevs, their neighbors and friends, became witnesses to meetings and farewells, sorrow and happiness, losses and hopes that many families in Russia have experienced. The story of the simple inhabitants of the old Moscow apartment reflects the history of our country in the 20th century. It was told to us not only by the heroes themselves but also by their belongings: furniture and clothing, dishes and books, games and household items. After all, objects carry the imprint of time, keep memories and traces of the era in which they were created and served. They are witnesses to that history which is not written in textbooks but is very important for each of us, the history of our families, our friends, the history of ourselves.
