Our days. Bob Johansen has just sold his thriving software development company and is now looking forward to a life of leisure. There is time for himself: he can travel, read books, watch movies and series, play video games. Life is insured with a cryogenic company. But fate is unfair, and Bob dies crossing the street.
117 years later. Bob wakes up after thawing and discovers that the corpse lacks human rights, and is now the property of the state. Bob is uploaded into a computer system, and he becomes the AI manager of an interstellar probe searching for planets to colonize. The stakes are high: if he refuses — he will be deleted, if he agrees — he will become a target for competitors. Other countries are also launching probes, and their AIs won't be joking.
The safest place for Bob is in space, the farther from Earth, the better. At least, that's what he thinks. But the universe is full of inhabitants, and border violators annoy them — extremely annoy them.
