Glass Houses

In the village of Three Pines, Halloween is joyfully celebrated. However, the festive mood dims when a strange figure in a black cloak and mask appears on the village meadow. Police Inspector Gamache, wishing to understand who this person is, tries to engage him in conversation and lead him away. But the stranger stands unwaveringly, although he seems to have no intention of harming anyone. It turns out that he is depicting a cobrador — a Spanish debt collector who in the Middle Ages pursued debtors, silently appealing to their conscience. To whom did the cobrador come in the village of Three Pines? While this question occupies the local residents, the stranger disappears, and a dead body in the debt collector's costume is found in the church basement. One of the guests who came to the celebration has been killed. The motive for the murder is unclear, but it seems the victim saw something that was not meant for prying eyes...
