Socialists come to power in the U.S., and the government takes a course on "equal opportunities," considering it fair to make the useless and talentless rich at the expense of the talented and wealthy. Persecution of business leads to the destruction of the economy, and one by one, talented individuals and the best entrepreneurs begin to disappear under mysterious circumstances. The main characters of the novel, steel king Hank Rearden and vice president of the railroad company Dagny Taggart, hopelessly attempt to resist the tragic events. Instead of universal prosperity, society plunges into apathy and chaos.
