Marquis de Sade entered history as an apologist for the theory of permissiveness and freedom from any shackles, and sometimes behind the scandalous reputation of the marquis, his numerous literary merits are lost: exquisite style, first-class black humor, bright and apt statements, deeply developed characters, and a clearly traceable morality in each work. And although de Sade often argued that fate is ruthless, the insatiability of passions will never leave a person on earth, and true peace can only be found in the grave, his prose also contains thoughts that the death penalty is immoral, any criminal deserves a chance for redemption, mercy proves to be more effective than any punishment, and virtue can triumph over vice.
