Imogen Clark wakes up early on her sixteenth birthday and instead of the usual gift from her parents, she finds their decapitated bodies at the dining table. And also — a message from the killer.

Joining the case are Jezzy and Quinny, recently demoted to junior detectives and desperately eager to return to more important matters than simply watching suspects. But it seems that Jezzy is more connected to this crime than anyone could have thought. After all, it's hardly a coincidence that she and Imogen were born on the same day.

The threads of the investigation lead towards a mysterious stalker who has been hunting Jezzy for many years. But who is he, how is he connected to her past, and what drives him to kill in such a terrible, brutal way?
