The Dead Lake

«The Dead Lake» — one of the main works of Nekrasov the prose writer, written in collaboration with A. Ya. Panayeva. The novel consists of several interconnected stories describing the customs and mores of Russian society in the first half of the 19th century: the splendor of aristocratic salons, merchant intrigues, the backstage of the theater scene, and the dark secrets of the city outskirts. At the center of the narrative is the tragic fate and unhappy love of actress Anna Lyubska, a gentle young girl destined to face the betrayal of a close person, the cruelty and greed of this society. Her life, like the lives of many other characters, is inexorably linked to the Dead Lake — a mysterious place that lures the desperate to it, harbors terrible secrets of the past, and seems to feed on human vices, pushing characters towards mad actions, crimes, and revenge...
