Trying to come to terms with the loss of his son, who died at the very beginning of World War II, elderly Englishman John Howard goes fishing in a small village in the French Alps. Underestimating the speed of the Nazis' advance, who captured all of France in just a few days, Howard finds himself in occupied territory and decides to return home at any cost. However, like the Pied Piper of Hamelin, children in need of help flock to the old man, and he cannot refuse them. Thus, Howard leads the children to the distant sea — not to their doom, but to save them.
