In «Childhood», the hero lives in the ancestral estate, surrounded by relatives and mentors, experiencing joy, love, and carefree moments for the first time, which are disrupted by the loss of his mother and the move to Moscow.
«Adolescence» immerses the reader in the atmosphere of the transitional age: Nikolenka faces internal contradictions, loneliness, the search for the meaning of life, makes deep friendships for the first time, and experiences the death of his grandmother.
In «Youth», the hero feels separate from his family, discovers the joys and disappointments of first love, makes mistakes, and for the first time seriously contemplates his own moral principles and future.

The books amazed the author's contemporaries with their subtle psychology and the unusual for that time technique of self-analysis.
To this day, these works serve as reliable assistants to young readers in matters of self-determination and character formation when facing a changing world.
