Wilkie Collins was trained as a lawyer and was well aware of the intricacies of the marriage legislation of the Victorian era, which he masterfully wove into the plot of the novel "Husband and Wife". Anna Silvestre, Blanche Landi, Geoffrey Delamain, and Arnold Brinkworth fell into the trap of a legal paradox known as the "Scottish marriage", where a man and woman can become husband and wife at any moment, simply by declaring their intention to marry in front of witnesses. Some of them had ulterior motives, while others accidentally found themselves in this entanglement.
