Sir Willoughby Patterne, a handsome, wealthy, and respected landowner in the neighborhood, decides to start a family by the age of thirty. After several meetings at balls and dinner parties, he chooses the young and determined beauty Clara Middleton. The bride's family announces the engagement, and Clara, along with her father, comes to visit the Patterne estate.
