Swan Song

The first post-war production of Wagner's "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". The opera house in Oxford assembled the best cast. But shortly before the premiere, Edwin Shorthouse, who was performing the leading role, was found hanging in his dressing room. The police consider it a suicide, as the room was locked from the inside. However, arriving at the crime scene, Jervais Fen is sure — Shorthouse, whose talent was combined with an incredibly difficult character, was murdered. But who did it? The young conductor who was ruthlessly tormented by the deceased? The first tenor, whose wife Shorthouse unsuccessfully pursued? Or a couple of aspiring artists who clearly know much more about what happened than they say?..
