The book tells the dramatic story of Phoebe Dolores Brown — the daughter of a black healer and a white plantation owner in pre-war America. For a long time, Phoebe does not feel like a slave: she lives in the master's house, receives an education (her literacy and music are taught by the master's sister), and even has a promise of freedom after turning 18.
A sharp turn in the heroine's fate occurs when the vengeful wife of the planter decides to get rid of her and sends Phoebe to a slave auction. This moment becomes a point of no return: the heroine, beaten and humiliated, ends up in the Lapierre prison. This place is known as a slave market, where black people become commodities.
