The Silver Age. In St. Petersburg, the bohemia gathers at the "Wandering Dog." In Odessa, the café-shanty buzzes with life, sailors, anarchists, and binders stroll around. Meanwhile, a Russian ethnographic expedition sets off to distant Dagomea, in West Africa, and encounters something dark, inexplicable, infernal, bearing death in the jungle. Travelers returning from Africa are killed one by one. Police officer Valentin Sablin and lawyer Alexander Krasovsky take on the investigation of these brutal crimes.
