Discontent with life, Jess Ockroyd, a well-off middle-aged man, decides to leave his family and set off in search of adventure. Along the way, he joins a highly diverse troupe of wandering actors, which also includes a respectable old maid, a frivolous young dancer, a disillusioned teacher of his profession, a sharp-tongued comedian, a banjo-playing magician, a charming married couple, and a delightful young singer.

The novel "Good Friends," published in 1929, earned its author a reputation as an outstanding prose writer. The public was captivated by the fact that, unlike many other writers of the "lost generation," Priestley did not lose his optimism and sincerely believed that many of the post-war hardships could be endured. The novel won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, was adapted for film three times, and remained on bestseller lists for several decades.
