Unsatisfied with life, Jess Oakroyd, a wealthy middle-aged man, decides to leave his family and embark on an adventure. Along the way, he joins a highly diverse troupe of wandering actors, which includes a respectable old maid, a frivolous young dancer, a disillusioned teacher, a sharp-tongued comedian, a magician playing the banjo, a charming married couple, and a delightful young singer.

Published in 1929, the novel "Good Friends" earned its author the reputation of an outstanding prose writer. The public was captivated by the fact that, unlike many other writers of the "lost generation," Priestley had not lost his optimism and sincerely believed that many of the post-war hardships could be endured. The novel won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, was adapted to film three times, and remained on bestseller lists for several decades.
