The Song of Pern

Many generations ago, on the blooming Pern, a Earth-like planet orbiting the yellow star Rakbat, humans landed. The new world resembled paradise, and the arrivals from Earth established a colony in this paradise. Who could have known that around Pern, on an elongated elliptical orbit, moves the Red Star, a small red planet that every two hundred years, approaching Pern, releases in its atmosphere silvery Threads — spores that destroy all living things. The only salvation from the scourge descending upon the planet from space is the fire-lizards, winged reptiles that spew fire from their mouths and incinerate the deadly Threads. Over time, the descendants of the Earthlings bred enormous dragons from these creatures for the protection of the planet, and each dragon has a rider, a person with a strong mental bond with their winged brother…

The trilogy about the harper Menolly, continuing the "Pern Cycle," tells the story of the difficult path of the owner of a wonderful gift, capable of influencing people's actions and, as a result, the future of the planet through songs and melodies that penetrate the heart.
