Before you is the fourth book in a cycle of works by an American classic, which tells the adventures of the hunter Nathaniel Bumppo, known as Leatherstocking. Over thirty years have passed since the events described in the novel «The Pathfinder».

Natti Bumppo is no longer young, but he is still passionate about hunting and lives with his old friend Chingachgook in a small forest cabin. This honest and noble hunter cannot come to terms with the enormous changes happening around him: forests are being cut down and turned into fields by new colonists, and he, an experienced scout and pathfinder, cannot understand the new laws and relationships between people. At the center of the novel is the local judge Marmaduke Temple, his daughter Elizabeth, and a young man named Oliver Edwards, who is in love with the girl.
