Riders of Pern

Many, many generations ago, Earthlings landed on the blooming Pern, a terrestrial-type planet of the yellow star Rakbat in the distant constellation of Sagittarius. The new world resembled a paradise, and the newcomers from Earth established a colony in this paradise. Who could know that around Pern, on an elongated elliptical orbit, moves the Red Star, a small red planet that every two hundred years, drawing near to Pern, releases silver Threads into its atmosphere — spores that destroy all living things. Paradise turns into hell, and this lasts for half a century. The only salvation from the affliction descending on the planet from space is the fire lizards, winged reptiles that breathe fire and burn the deadly Threads. Over time, the descendants of Earthlings bred these creatures into giant dragons for the protection of the planet, and each dragon has a rider, a human with a strong mental connection to their winged brother. But there are long Intervals when the orbit of the Red Star passes far from Pern, and the Threads do not reach the planet. And so, during one of those periods, when life on Pern has stabilized and people have forgotten everything related to past tragedies, belief in the mission of the riders and saviors of the planet — the dragons loses strength. It is then that the sky of Pern is illuminated by the ominous light of the approaching Red Star…
