In the Outskirts of the Great Empire. Book One

"In the Outskirts of the Great Empire" is one of the early novels by V.S. Pikul. It is a panoramic narrative about the life of a provincial Russian town in the fictional, yet quite recognizable, Urensky province at the beginning of the 20th century. The work is written in the spirit of the satire of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, one of Valentin Savvich's favorite authors. The idea of the novel and the character of the main hero - Prince Sergey Yakovlevich Myshetsky - arose in the writer as a result of long and careful study of archival documents from the pre-revolutionary State Duma. The publication includes a large number of illustrations from the unique archive of V.S. Pikul.
