The novel reflects a difficult period in history, related to the construction of the Murmansk railway and the formation of the Arctic Ocean fleet, from which the heroic Northern Fleet later emerged.

The Russian cruiser «Askold» began combat service in the Dardanelles operation, entering the revolution as a ship of the Northern fleet.

Most of the novel is dedicated to the struggle against the interventionists in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, and Karelia.
