The Man Who Laughs

A tragic novel about a man whose appearance became a stigma, and whose life became a test of humanity.

In 1869, one of the darkest and most poignant novels by Victor Hugo was published. He studied the history and life of England for months, aiming to portray the aristocracy from an unexpected perspective. "The Man Who Laughs" caused a huge resonance and quickly gained popularity. Later, it was Gwynplaine who inspired artists in creating the image of the Joker.

"Dea was an exile from the kingdom of light, Gwynplaine was an outcast among living people." Dea is blind, and Gwynplaine is disfigured by people and therefore forever wears a mask of laughter on his face. In search of earnings, they go to London, where they confront the brutal laws of society.
