1946. In the crypt of one of the Tambov cemeteries, the body of a young woman is discovered. The detectives manage to establish that the victim is Olga Filatova, who worked at the local hospital, was a widow of a front-line soldier, and had a three-year-old daughter who disappeared after her mother’s death. The suspects include: Filatova's partner, with whom she started a relationship after being left without a husband, a disabled man from the hospital, and also a local fool who showed attention to the woman. The detectives investigate one version after another. Soon it becomes known that another murdered woman’s body has been found in the river, who also had a missing child.
