Fourteen-year-old Joy is a smart and quiet girl. She loves to read and walk, but hates constantly being the new kid in different schools. Her parents keep moving and try very hard to appear as an ordinary family.
But everything changes when the Dark Ones find them. Joy's father is killed, and her mother is kidnapped. Joy learns the secret of her origins, that she is a half-blood, one of the Light. The girl enrolls in a school for magical beings, Ravenbridge, hoping to master her gift. But the Dark Ones have not finished their hunt, and the howl of the barghests signifies their return.
