Paris in the second half of the 19th century – a dazzling capital, a city of fulfilled hopes and dazzling luxury. This is how it once greeted the enterprising young man, a master of commerce and a favorite among women, Octave Mouret, whose motto was "conquer women, and you will conquer the whole world!".
But Paris did not present itself in the same light to the young provincial girl Denise, who was not in search of luxury and glamour but was forced to move to the capital after the death of her parents. For a moment, the luxury of the unprecedented department store "Ladies' Happiness," owned by Mouret, stunned the girl, but Parisian life quickly showed Denise how sad the fate of those less fortunate could be…
