Two thousand years ago, a terrible disaster occurred on the planet Nim, the worst in its history. Since then, people have been trying to survive on rare mountain peaks that make up the single Continent-Archipelago.
On Nim, everyone has a Gift, but only the chosen ones can have a strong one, or, as is commonly said, a "big" one. The rest - small Gifts - are merely a labor force in the service of all humanity. The orphans from the "Fongfrua" shelter, Gaspar, Cedric, Kateira, and Archibald, who possess small Gifts, decide to take their fate into their own hands and run away from the nightmarish mists of the shelter director, Madame Batonsek.
With the arrival of Lin, a mysterious girl who reveals nothing about herself, the friends' escape plan is thwarted. However, Lin holds one very important secret and can help thwart the dark designs of the ruthless Emperor of the North, who lives beyond the mountain wall.
