«The Kreutzer Sonata» — the most scandalous work of Tolstoy. In the pages of the novella, the writer outlines his late views on the relationships between the...
sexes.
«The Death of Ivan Ilyich» — one of the peaks of world psychological prose: a chronicle of a terminal illness, where the dying man refuses to accept death and comes to understand what his life has been.
«Hadji Murat» — late Tolstoy's reflections on resilience and the corrupting power of authority. The last major artistic work and, in some sense, Tolstoy's testament.
Quote:
What a confusion this is! Out of a thousand marrying men, not only in our everyday life but, unfortunately, even among the people, there is hardly one who has not been married at least ten times, or even a hundred or a thousand, like Don Juan, before marriage. (There are, now, I hear and observe, young men who are pure, feeling, and know that this is not a joke, but a great matter. God help them! But in my time, there was not a single one among ten thousand.) And everyone knows this and pretends not to know. In all novels, the feelings of the heroes, the ponds, the bushes around which they walk, are described in detail; but, describing their great love for some maiden, nothing is said about what happened to him, the interesting hero, before: not a word about his visits to houses, about maids, cooks, and other men's wives. If there are such indecent novels, they are not put into the hands of those who need to know this most, – the girls.
