In a Moscow apartment, a woman was killed with two close-range shots. Many could wish her ill, even her own daughter, whom the mother relentlessly and cruelly destroyed the life of. Or maybe the trail of the wrongdoer stretches back... to her youth, to the city of Leningrad, where several high school students once organized a "secret society"? And how is all this connected to the full of suffering and adventure life of the heroic "daughter of the regiment" during the Great Patriotic War – now a frail old woman whose heart also, it turns out, knows how to remember, love, and hate?
In the novel, the tragic fate of a girl, who miraculously survived in besieged Leningrad, the story of girls and a young man who decided to fight the system, and the drama of one family: a grandmother, a mother, and a son, full of pain, love, and the blows of fate, are masterfully intertwined.
