Anthony Trollope is a British classic, whose contemporary popularity in the English-speaking world can only be compared to that of Jane Austen ("Trollope kills me with his mastery," - wrote Leo Tolstoy in his diary), and "The Chronicles of Barsetshire"... is deservedly considered one of his main achievements. "Doctor Thorn" is the third book of the "Chronicles".
Thus, young Francis Gresham faces the choice of whether to marry a wealthy heiress to save the family estate or to follow his heart. And Doctor's niece Mary Thorn must decide whether she has the right to marry her beloved. Although Doctor Thorn is older and wiser than both, and most importantly, knows what is unknown to them and to Francis's family, it is he who must make the most difficult moral choice.
