Schism. Solovetsky Sitting. The troops of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich are besieging the Solovetsky Monastery. A Moscow bandit named Zosim, pursued by the deacons of the Moscow Investigation Office, washes ashore at the monastery. While outside the monastery walls, the former soul-taker becomes imbued with the monastic feat and service. His mentors in understanding faith become the venerable elder Eleazar and two monks – Simon and Enaki. From now on, their fates are inseparably linked, both in life and in death. The cornerstone in the life of Zosim and the monks Simon and Enaki after the siege and storming of the Solovetsky Monastery will be the protodeacon Avvakum, who is imprisoned in the city of Pustosersk.
