High Court Justice Barber presides over the most serious trials in Southern England. He has delivered numerous sentences – but which of the criminals convicted by him or their relatives sent him an anonymous letter with threats? At first, Barber does not take it seriously – however, soon he barely manages to avoid death. The police remain inactive. And then amateur detective Francis Pettygrew takes on the case – a man who has a rare gift for asking the right questions to the right people. But will he have time to find out who wants to get rid of the judge before the killer carries out their plan?
