Young Mr. Lewisham falls in love with the beautiful Ethel, but loses contact with her when he has to move to London. Meanwhile, Arthur Kipps, a man from the lower middle class, tries to climb the social ladder, but the suddenly acquired wealth does not bring him happiness, making him value more what is truly important in life. Wells himself considered 'Kipps' his best work.
